Is “busyness” truly a badge of honor, or a barrier to clarity?

I’ve noticed a pervasive culture in the business world where being constantly occupied is often equated with importance and productivity. Early in my career, I certainly fell into this trap, believing that a full calendar meant a successful career. However, I’ve come to realize that relentless activity can often obscure the path to truly impactful work.

My personal lesson came during a particularly demanding period. I was juggling multiple projects, feeling overwhelmed but also a strange sense of accomplishment from simply doing so much. Yet, the quality of my decisions and the innovation in my solutions felt stagnant. It was only when I deliberately carved out blocks of unstructured time—for walks, deep reading, or simply staring out the window—that genuine breakthroughs started to emerge.

This shift in perspective taught me that true leadership isn’t about filling every minute, but about creating space for strategic thought and intentional action. Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do is to pause and reflect, allowing insights to surface. It’s about optimizing for impact, not just activity.
